[[]]

Actually, I'm quite nervous about my trip to Finland. I feel so woefully unprepared, have only confirmed my first 3 nights of accommodations and nothing else.

Sigh i'm so dumb, I really should have booked in May but oh well, all part of God's plan #christiancopium.

Ok whatever, I think this trip should be a very good learning experience for me. It has been a hot minute since I last travelled alone, and for a significant amount of time. In fact, this is likely going to be the longest amount of time I am going to be alone for awhile and this is by design anyway.

Keeping it unprepared is not the intent, anyway, it is to keep it flexible and allow yknow, things to work out if they do. If nothing works out I reckon I could just book a place nearby and continue my read and write but now that I have the option, I'm like playing with the idea of travelling a bit around... Though I would like to not spend too much time travelling on the road. It might be nice to have like a new-ish scenery each week? I dunno.

Well, I think it would also be an interesting exercise in spending money. I'm very bad at spending money on consumption myself but I can foresee that I'll balk at spending on my own accoms, and at the same time, i'm not young (or maybe I am) enough to share hostels - actually, I think i'm young enough to still do that, but perhaps not for a long duration, would be fun to meet new people too. Think I'll also find it hard to find cheap food. And honestly, I can probably eat cheap food. But SHOULD I eat cheap food...? Probably not right? ugh. I'm so bad at this lol. Good exposure / shock therapy I guess.

I think i'm scared i'll be too lonely after too long, but I won't know if I don't try it I guess. I hope the books and such are good company, i'm sure they will be. I would like to enjoy solitude properly. Previously when I was solo travelling I always feel lonely after 3 days, but, thats because of hyper vigilance and yknow, traveling traveling i.e seeing sights and crap. Now i'm sure I don't wanna see sights, am happy to stay indoors, perhaps it will be better?

Actually its very exciting but because it is a journey into the unknown 赴一趟未知 (and it is alot more unknown now than the original stay in a cabin and read concept). I am actually very excited to face the unknown again. Work is quite known, family is quite known, even friends are quite known.

Ah, and I am excited to claim back headspace, identity and all that.

[[Misaligned incentives]]

I think that fundamentally, misaligned incentives are probably the greatest category of problems facing groups of people with the problem being more significant and detrimental when societies / organisations / groups are larger.

How does this problem's size scale with number of humans towards the same aim i'm not 100% sure, but I reckon AT LEAST linearly?

It seems to me that it is obvious there can be no misaligned incentives if there is only one person on earth. Arguably 2 people on earth also no misaligned incentives, assuming that they are equal, as each person's incentive will just be doing what he/she wants.

The damage that misaligned incentives does is that it is a structural problem that allows non-malicious peoples to do damage to the greater whole naturally i.e just by pursuing their own self interest. This bar of "naturally" is very significant as this is the default state of most peoples. I might, on a very free day, argue that to not act naturally for good (e.g to align to the greater project regardless of the misaligned incentives) requires a deviation that is almost on par in "effort" or "deviation-ness" as to actively, maliciously sabotage something (I suppose that might be an equal if we take moral scruples out of the equation).

Together with stupidity (which allows a person to do damage to the greater whole naturally by incompetence), misaligned incentives probably account for a good portion of the harm done to the greater whole with only largely malicious harm unaccounted for.

Let's give some examples of misaligned incentives:

1. Financial advisors recommend a product that would earn them more commission. The commission aligns their monetary incentives with that of the product owner (which wants more people to invest in the product, presumably because they can earn fees of assets under management). However, this might potentially be out of alignment with the investor's interest, that is... to earn a high return on investment based on risk profile .etc.

2. Politicians vote for policies that gain them the most money. The industry lobbies with gifts and money, monetarily aligning the politicians with them. However, this might potentially be out of alignment with the voter's interest.

3. Managers promote someone more incompetent in their team to be "assistant manager" in order to safeguard their own position from being threatened. However, this might potentially be out  of alignment with the organisation that wants the best person for the job.

I suppose the last example is the classic principal-agent problem though the rest are probably also somewhat.

I recognise that in each scenario there is an implicit should. That financial advisors SHOULD be aligned with the investor's, that politicians SHOULD align with voters (or at least society, if you are not in a democracy), that managers SHOULD align with the organisation which is kinda un-argued for but if you wanna argue about that, maybe pick it up with someone who has the energy to argue that with you cos that's not me.

Insofar as the SHOULD holds, it follows that structures SHOULD seek to align incentives in order to prevent these self-destructive forces from acting against the structures.

There are many ways to re-align incentives:

1. One could just ban the common misalignment of incentives e.g make bribery (by any other name) illegal. This could be blocking commissions based structures for financial advisors, criminalising lobbying .etc.

2. One could just realign monetarily by paying them better. E.g clients pay more for financial advice, advisor doesn't need to earn money from commission. Same for politicians, same for most govt functions.

3. One could re-align with the correct person / thing more often. This could be perhaps choosing a new financial advisor more often, rotating managers more often, voting for politicians more often (e.g after each time they vote).

Ok sry, quite pathetic, no bandwidth to write more. lolol. too much studying GST and listening to international tax structures. All I wanted to say, really, is that corruption is very bad.

[[]]

I was down with the stomach flu, or so I think, for the past week or so.

And it was quite the week. I only took 1 day off work because I was quite busy but I cleared my social calendar. And so I spent a lot of time at home, either on the computer, or on the toilet, or on the bed in between the other 2. And of course, physically it was unpleasant and all. And mentally waking up to go to the toilet in the middle of the night is actually quite tiring.

But I thought that spiritually it was quite rewarding, though of course I could have used the sickness better... It is easier to pray when I can't fall asleep. Kinda like last resort prayer. Which is less preferable to first resort prayer. But is generally genuine, nonetheless, if but for weak people like me.

Also thought that it was good to slow down the pace of life. Work is not really slowing down though and I don't really like being so busy.

I think it is good to fall sick sometimes. Probably a natural rhythm towards being in sickness and in health. Being sick reminds one of their mortality and frailty. And memento mori. You also get to see life in a different state of mind or frame of mind due to different frame of body, at the very least.

Of course, one should not be sickly and strive to be generally healthy, but when sickness comes, I find that enjoying it rather than single mindedly chowing down pills and drugs to "knock out" and "recover" lowers the likelihood that you will get sick again so soon.
